In 1980, the Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, New York. The US ice hockey team was not expected to do well. They were a group of young, college-aged players, and were going up against some of the best teams in the world, including the powerhouse Soviet team.

The game between the US and the Soviet Union was scheduled for February 22, 1980. The Soviets were heavily favored, having won the gold medal in five of the previous six Olympic games.

The Americans started off strong, with a goal by team captain Mike Eruzione just over halfway through the first period. The Soviets quickly responded with a goal of their own, but the Americans didn't let up. The game was tied going into the third period.

The tension in the arena was palpable as the minutes ticked by. With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Eruzione scored again, putting the Americans ahead for the first time in the game. The crowd erupted in cheers as the players on the bench jumped to their feet.

As the clock counted down, the Soviet team made a desperate push to tie the game, but the Americans held them off. When the final horn sounded, the US had won 4-3, in what is now known as the "Miracle on Ice."

The game was about more than just hockey. At a time when the US was dealing with inflation, a recession and the Iran hostage crisis, the win gave the nation a much-needed boost of morale.
